Automorphic Numbers – another Reacher Lesson

A Wanted Man (Jack Reacher, #17)A Wanted Man by Lee Child
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’ve read nearly all the Jack Reacher books and when I read the previous one I thought they had all become formulaic – maybe an indication of a writing team. However, this latest one got my juices flowing again.

If you don’t like numbers and facts, then Reacher is not for you. For me, I love the analysis, the number play and geography. Despite having worked with high level math in physics, I didn’t know what an automorphic number was. Now I do. Go figure, as they say.

My impression was that the action was not as gritty as some previous Reacher stories, and the ultimate plot was underplayed – given Reacher’s liking for numbers there was a missed opportunity here to develop the thinking. It put a new twist on the Bitcoin idea (and that’s no spoiler).

For me, this rates a 4*.
